This one time ...
The ever delightful Dan Kelly is back and blogging - a bit - sort of - well one anyway - from beginning of December wot I didn't know about cause I have been slack with checking sites and it has been ages since he wrote anything anyway and I've been distracted - not that this one is earthshaking or anything, but it is still nice to hear there are new songs being writ, and it made me think of they time in Sydney when we rented a house but didn't have a lawnmower and the guy we hired would only come when we called and not just regular every fortnight like I wanted and one time I went out to the front yard started cutting it with scissors instead cause I'd heard a third or perhaps multiple hand story about someone who had Asian neighbors who used to always cut their lawn with scissors, which I think is probably bollocks.

Forget my own head if it were not screwed on
Aha! I was going to fess that since I have committed to an extra fornight, I have decided I need a special present for my fortitude and have bought flights to Brisbane to see the ever so wonderful Glenn Richards and Dan Luscombe and Mike Noga *sigh* I shall say his name again, Mike Noga, play at The Old Museum on Saturday 10 September.
I just have to hope that I can pay 8 weeks ahead of my rent and be ultra frugal so that I can also pay for some sort of accommodation instead of having to wander the street after till the early hours when perhaps I could find a quiet corner of the casino to snooze in until it is time to fly home.
I have no self control.
Obviously.
But darn, they are all so pretty and lovely and talented.
How can one resist?
If I won lotto I would finance recordings for them all for like totally ages. Yet more reason why other people should write to Golden Casket to plead my case.
And now that I think of it ... what the hell is Dan Kelly doing? Has he got a new recording out yet? Fcukign pull your finger out dan.

Time?
There is none.
I have realised why I was grumpy over the weekend. My backbrain remembered I was missing Glenn Richard's performance / musical extravaganza / gig.
The delightful young Mr Kelly and awesome Mr Liddiard are this weekend.
I shall be all snarls and sneers, cause I sensibly decided not to go.
I hate senisble.
Senisble can kiss my arse.
And sure, he was wearing a nice shirt, but what shirt, ey?
Is it new?
Is it brown?
As a description 'a nice shirt' sucks.
Also I want a picture of the pointy shoes.
If there is time (hahahahahaha she laughed scornfully at herself) I shall troll the net for reviews and pictures.

Dream diary entry
Wednesday night/Thursday morning Dream - House from disaster dream with neighbours dropping round to tell me stuff or look for stuff, can't remember, and leaving doors open all the time and letting all the hundreds of kittens out without noticing and me having to try and catch them all again without anybody seeing all the hundreds of cats and dobbing me into the authorities.
Vacant lot next door in last night’s dream held an old style fort/slippery dip/play ground equipment.
Dan Kelly was measuring it up and decorating it and doorknocking the neighbours houses to let them know about a solo gig he was going to do there.
Helped paint narrowish vertical stripes on the vertical planks and horizontal stripes on the horizontal planks of wood and steps (young mr kelly ain't usually that into geometrical shapes but dreams don't have to make sense).
Didn’t get to dream the gig though – bummer hey?
Love that old highset house I get to live in but. Hope I get to dream about it again soon. Like going back to the same place in dreams. I am a stick-in-the-mud.

Can you see the cracks in my skull?
I am feeling terribly conflicted.
Glenn Richards is going to be playing some shows in Melbourne mid-March and what if this is the only time I get to see them play? What if he doesn't come to Queensland for ages? Besides if he does come up here it won't be full band like wot they'd have in Melbourne (which is not to say that solo Glenn or duo Glenn is also no doubt excellent - in fact solo Glenn is charming -but full band Glenn would be nice to experience, hey)?
But ... but ... Gareth Liddiard is going to be playing in Brisbane March 26, supported by the ever effervescent Dan Kelly and I'd really like to go to that too.
But I've never been to Northcote and don't know my way around and I hate going places I've never been before cause I am terrible at reading bus/train/tram schedules and I don't even know how to get a tram ticket though I spose they would sell them on the tram? wouldn't they? Contrary though, I am perfectly comfortable going to the Zoo. I have a hotel I always stay at and a cafe I always go to, but ...
the flights to Melboure are actually cheaper at the moment than the Brisbane ones - crazy hey?
But the accommodation is bound to be more expensive
And I really should be saving up for flyscreens and visiting my mother and paying her back for the scooter quicker rather than later and not flying off to go listen to musicians.
OH WOE WOOOOOE WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOE WHAT TO DO?!?!

Saturday
No breakfast for me. A slow stumble about the house, early hydration then a lame leap to scooter and putter to my sisters to proudly extend my copy of Cryoburn by Lois McMaster Bujold for her reading pleasure.
I have taken the opportunity to watch the first episode of the late session wot Dan Kelly was on. Very enjoyable though I find Jack Thompson much easier to understand when he puts on an accent. He doesn't move his lips enough in his normal conversational speaking voice and its a little too slurred for me to understand easily.
I think its because I come from a family of mildly deaf people - lots of loud voices are used - plus we all enunciate a lot due to early "art of speech" lessons (not so much me but my sisters and probably my mother before us).
I am going to make an effort to write something today. I've done nothing creative for ages. I feel dull, like the colour is bleeding out of me.

Stuff
Uncle Sidney caught The Late Session that Dan Kelly was on (which I wrote on my calendar so that I wouldn't forget and then got caught up in a book and forgot).
I'd played Drunk on Election night for him once before, but he hadn't been in a listening mood cause he was raving about another musician's cd that he'd come across and was playing repetitively for the last so many weeks - but he was dead impressed this time and raved enthuiastically during our weekly phone chat last night.
I'd love to take him along to seem him live, but he isn't well enough.
Bypasses, valve replaced, bowel cancer, colostomy bag, type 2 diabetes and his knees are fucked, which they can't do replacements for because of all the above listed issues (and the colostomy bag makes farting noises which he is self conscious about).
I have Tex Perkins and his Ladyboyz playing today. I wish they'd done two versions, one without vocals, not that there is anything wrong with Tex - we like Mr Tex - but I would like to be able to hear all the little weird
fiddly things they did with the music better.
Up to "I don't wanna be here anymore" and my mind is visualising a film clip of him singing whilst sitting on a toilet and making constipated faces ...You don't know how hard I got it...

Perhaps I've just had time to become accustomed to it now?

oOo OOO oOo
There's a clip for Dan Kelly's Dream!
Delightful and suitably disturbing.
If those young ladies lips were any bigger they would be in danger of swallowing their own heads - lol
(not going to get to read this tonight, so chucking it here for later)

Edit: Was watching 'Last chance to see' cause I loved the book and I keep hoping I will like the show because Stephen Fry is lovely, but my attention always drift away and I start reading my book instead, but my nephew and his half brother were temporarily watching with me, instead of playing whatever computer game they were playing, maybe age of empires? I don't know and Stephen Fry and Mark were talking about sharks being killed for their fins and how they often just cut the fins off and chuck the still living sharks back in the water and my nephew piped up with "They should at least give them prosethtics first".
(sometimes I can't believe that I am one of those lame over fond aunties who bore complete strangers with things their young relatives have done - sorry)

Phew
Finally got to hear Dan Kelly's next single "Hold On".
It's a relief to find out I like it too, since I couldn't remember it from the show at the Troubadour.
P.S. and here is an interview on Undercover (which is quite long - sorry - but funny) which has him playing 'The Decommissioner" at the end :)

Patting pockets absentmindedly
Triple J Dan Kelly Interview - popping this here to listen to later when I can access a computer that has sound.
(nice my arse - lets my drunken comments through on myspace - never answers my questions on his blog - lost weight whilst I gained - obviously devil incarnate)

Friday Night
My timing estimates were not too far off. Arrived at hotel by 7:40 pm. Troubadour was not yet open when I wandered down and I adjourned beneath for chicken and mushroom rissotto.
Upstairs and a Gin and Tonic then drifted to my chair in the dark corner. Re-reading a Georgette Heyer. The pages have yellowed with age. Makes it a lot harder to read in dim light. Admonished by a handsome canadian for reading in bad light. My mouth got away from me. Said my eyes were already fucked. He said something along the lines of he can see I am wearing glasses, but still - he cared, you know. Replied it showed how kind and big hearted he was and that his mother would be proud of him.
He smelled nice. What is with this smelling of men? I must be being very dilligent with the litter trays for my nose to have started working again. Am not used to it. Disconcerting.
Blonde in attention-grabbing red dress sat in the empty chair betwixt canadian and myself (after asking my permission). If her hair had been red she would have been a good crack at resembling Jessica Rabbit - except with a sweet innocent air. Soft red knit wrap dress with high red shoes. Like an adult version of a special K ad. It made her look very jiggily and fleshily lush. She made friends with handsome canadian I think she missed having a posse of girlfriends to giggle with men over, as she kept looking to me and smiling. I remarked it seemed to be going well with the canadian and she said he was a dickhead and that she was after the whole package. Smart, handsome, rich. This did not stop the canoodling. I was of course envious of her dress and shoes to the tips of my toes and if I could wear them I would. She also seemed terribly nice which was galling *sigh*
I enjoyed Little Scout (first support) more when I closed my eyes. I think they are a headphone only band for me. I don't know why it should make a difference, but some music I enjoy on headphones and not out loud. Eagle and the Worm (second support) were freakin' great!
DK and his dream band brought out a couple of inflatable sharks to decorate the stage with - lol. Kiernan in turban. Dave in what looked like a ship's cap. I was some distance away and couldn't see well. It wasn't as full as for Mr Liddiard - maybe three quarters? - but they didn't have to ask anybody to stand up. Young man towards the front of the crowd was flinging his hair about vigorously to the music. Hopefully he has not strained anything. Mr Box did something glorious with his harmonica in the first song. Thoroughly sigh worthy. There were two songs I'd not heard before, both lovely. When is the damn album going to be available, ey? I hate waiting.
Had an excellent night and didn't miss my plane back. I am very glad I went.

In progress ...
I have a line from a Decemberist's song running through my head on endless repeat "and I will hang my head, hang my head low" and it's a great song, but I would prefer more of it.
Had the booklet out to sing the darn thing of an evening - trying to remember the words by repetition -but it is not sticking. Went to play the CD, but then remembered I can't sing along with Colin and saved myself the pain of sounding like a strangled chicken. That is always so disheartening.
http://syn.org.au/program/hoist/episode/audio/2010/05/10/dan-kelly/908
Just popping this here temporarily, to remind myself to check back. There was something mentioned about an interview upload on the way.
I've realised that it's not so much that I am obsessed with these musicians, I just like finding stuff on the net. It's a hobby. I am willing to acknowledge that it is a weird hobby.
Edit: That damn $69 fare is still there, curses *shakes fist at screen*
(of course the flight to Brisbane is now up to $210 from its previous $199)

Get thee behind me Satan
Forgot the rubber band again today.
Maybe I should put it round my neck instead?
Might work better?
That $69 6 am flight from Brisbane to Townsville Saturday morning is taunting me with its bargin-ness.
Though getting out to the airport by 5 am with a hangover after a night out (and probably only three hours intermittent napping so as not to sleep in) is cruel and unusual self-punishment.

I have no self control
Lady at work saw me peeking at the flights to Brisbane again and asked me where my rubber band was.
I confessed that I left it at home, so she flicked my ear until I closed the page down.

Yo
Visited Uncle Sidney. Was treated to lunch and sat about listening to music. Made my way to town in time for all the school children and young adults to flood the walkways, so no shopping for me. Fled to my hotel and bathed and napped until frazzled nerves recovered.
Ate Thai - delicious and wandered down to the Hi Fi by 8 ish.
Papa -v- Pretty first support. Loud and thumpy. Initially distracted by the sprays and fountains of spit blossoming forth from singers mouth, like translucent fireworks. Spray of flower like dimensions interspersed with rocket like bits shooting out to hang in the air and then fall away. Was very into them by about their fifth or sixth song which featured the word "wreckingball" and I know not what else - I am not very good at catching what people are singing if I don't' know the songs. Bought their EP. I felt old just looking at them. Somebody said they are only in Grade 12. Bass player had excellent hair. Liked them alot :)
Next Dan Kelly and his Dream Band made up of Kiernan (whom I was not expecting to see), Indra and Dave. Indra and Kiernan resplendent in sarong skirts. Dave in long white shorts, bright red hawian shirt and straw hat. Dan in the stary shirt I want and his aviator cap which I lust for and was too far away to even attempt to steal. My little patch of crowd would not SHUT THE FUCK UP. They also had annoying laughs. Not that I am standing on rock in which to pitch stones from. My giggle has been likened to Betty Rubbles. Opened with Fire and Theft, which I adore and continued on with Catholic Leader and Classical DJ for Dandenong Station (I apolgise for my spelling and this airport keyboard which is dire) which the people around me nearly listened to. Bindi Irwin Apocalypse Jam, The Decomissioner (which I like a lot) and Dan Kelly's Nightmare (I missed the Ukeladies in the background on the do-it-dos). The rumble of background chatter never stopped.
I was regretting my sobriety and suffering crowd rage and my neck started hurting - probably because I had tensed up whilst imagining punching the blond chick with the phone in the nose - and I am afraid the sardine-esque crowd got the better of my nerves and I ran away after Paul Dempsey finished his first song and why are people always lurking in that last turn of the stairway? I shall become paranoid.
So my Friday was a bit of a fail and I am a chicken weiner dog nancy girl, though also a dutiful niece and a responsible adult. Had much more fun when off my face Thursday night. DK & Dream will undoubtedly be a delight at the troubadour in May and I won't be there because it is a Friday and I won't be able to get the day off work and I am damned if I am going to go to Cronulla, so I shall just have to make do with the cd when it is available.
I was very tempted by the tea-towel available in the merchandise.
Edit: and a song about going to spain? with two lesbians.

Thinkin' stuff
Well gosh darnit!
I should have held out.
I have no self control.
Don't think I am going to be able to get another day off but.
Only got away with April's because I booked it before they extended my contract.
If only it were a saturday.
*hums thoughtfully*

Buzzing
Ah-ha! Link to TripleJ post with aforementioned tune.
I have no idea what this sounds like still, cause the computer at work doesn't have sound. Earliest I am going to get to hear this is possibly tomorrow evening. Maybe.
My supervisor gave me an Easter egg which I have consumed like a hungry wolf eating something other than chocolate, cause that isn't good for dogs, and probably the wolf wouldn't touch it anyway, maybe like a bunny instead though? I wolfed my chocolate down like to was a bunny just doesn't sound quite right but, whatever.
Morning :)

Who listens to the radio?
Argh *pout*
Friend emailed to say has just heard Dan Kelly's Bindi Irwin song played on TripleJ
*mutters about work places that don't let her listen to music on headphones and force her to answer stoopid phone calls from old people instead*
... but this means it's all mixed and recorded, right?
This means there'll be cd's available in Brisbane, right?
Right?
Argh - blog damn you. Blog!
Edit: when asked what it sounded like my friend said "I didn't have the opportunity to listen properly, just heard drifts of it and thought "that sounds like Dan Kelly", and then heard it back announced. Sounds like his usual amusing white bread with jam :-p"
*ahem* white-bread was a reference to a comment in an article and we toyed with the idea of getting t-shirts made up that said "I like to eat white-bread with jam and cream" to wear to one of the shows when he was supporting Augie March - we didn't in the end do this - we are all talk and little action.

*ahem* white-bread was a reference to a comment in an article and we toyed with the idea of getting t-shirts made up that said "I like to eat white-bread with jam and cream" to wear to one of the shows when he was supporting Augie March - we didn't in the end do this - we are all talk and little action.
